Magpies out to soar again

Big 2017 finish helps Scoresby recruit
A SCINTILLATING finish to the 2017 campaign has convinced a host of players to return to a reinvigorated Scoresby outfit desperate to launch a deep finals assault this season.

Scoresby won its final nine home-and-away games last season to storm into the top five, only to be knocked out in the elimination final by eventual grand finalist Heathmont.

But the return of some familiar faces has the Magpies confident they can make further inroads in Division 3 in 2018.

Owen Chadwick, Brenton Legg and David Evans-Marcius have returned to Scoresby after spending the past four seasons at Division 1 club East Ringwood.

Jake Ryall (Rowville), Paul Chadwick (Vermont) and Cal McConnon (Vermont) will boost the onball brigade, while Dale Hehir is also training at Scoresby after spending last year with VFL club Box Hill.

Scoresby general manager Brett Davidson said the Magpies’ finish to 2017 had helped the club’s recruiting campaign.

“They saw that was a good opportunity for them to come back and be part of it, they obviously saw winning the games at the end of the year last year was a real positive,” Davidson said.

“There wasn’t a big hard sell to be honest, a lot of them are all mates with guys that are still at the club.”

After consecutive wooden spoons in 2014 and 2015 saw Scoresby drop from the top flight to Division 3, Davidson said the Magpies wanted to redevelop their culture under coach Scott Goldsworthy.

“Part of that was to connect with players that had left and chatting to them about what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to go about it and reinvigorate the club,” Davidson said.

“There’s a bit of unfinished business with some of those players because a lot of them played in the 2010 and 2011 first division grand final losses. That’s what they’ve actually made comment about, coming back and helping Scoresby to achieve some success.”

Scoresby opens its Division 3 season on April 7 with an away clash against Chirnside Park at Kimberley Reserve.

Brenton Legg takes a big mark for East Ringwood against Scoresby. This season he will pull on the black and white stripes.
